Beautiful beautiful gayborhoods
Every city in North America that I've lived in lies a beautiful little gayborhood. There's Davie Village in Vancouver, Christopher Street and Lower East Side in Manhattan, and the literally, Gayborhood here in Philadelphia. The combination of historical sites in the LGBTQ rights fighting history and the rainbow-colored improvements in the built environment conveys a sense of open mind and tolerance. which I think essential for an international and fashion city.
Richard Florida, the most influential scholar during my academic life (can't tell if it's during my whole life), also regards gayborhoods as high level of importance. He explains in the following article.

Here's the location map of spots in Davie Village adjacent to downtown Vancouver.
I highly recommend everyone take a trip there. The Davie Street points to the beautiful Stanley Park at the sea shore. You'll see rainbow pavements like this:
Plus pink bus stops like this:
And when you walk down to the sea (yeah there's the pleasant slope for walking along the street), you'll see sculptures from a Chinese artist, Yue Minjun. He is one of my favorites!
His works featured man with exaggerating smile on the face, and some will make you laugh but others may seems ironic depending on the context.
Here's an interview on Yue's laugh and pain.
