The Appropriation and Reproducibility of Art
After viewing the "Ways of Seeing" clip for class last week, I posed the question, "How has the art community benefitted from its accessibility thanks to modern media? In what ways has this been detrimental?" In preparation for my presentation on Barbara Kruger this week, I again considered these questions.
Kruger is no stranger to the detrimental effects of art's accessibility. If you're familiar with Kruger's work, you may notice that Supreme's iconic red sans serif logo is almost an identical copy of Kruger's red text.
In the age of mass media, reproducibility and appropriation have become increasingly common in the art space. While I've been toying with the idea of any potential benefits to this, I struggle to see any in the case of Kruger and Supreme, as Supreme profits off themes that Kruger so adamantly criticized.
We'll discuss this article during my presentation, but I wanted it to find a home on the blog for the sake of posterity.
