As we prepare for our first round of critiques, I found this article featuring Michael Hilsman’s paintings featuring vulnerability in art. The article makes note of the paintings’ depiction of the physical frailty of the body, along with the mental discomforts of “public exposure and the frequent mortification of self-expression” that comes with being an artist. I think it’s important to acknowledge this sense of vulnerability in our critiques, as illustrated very well in the men hiding/covering their faces in Hilsman’s paintings.
